History

Sports Club “LEVSKI” - Sofia was founded in 1911 by a group of students at II Male High School in Sofia and the main kind of sport that was practiced was football.
The club was officially registered on 24th May 1914. That date isconsidered to be its birthday date. The name of the club given inmemoriam to the Apostle of freedom Vassil Levski was proposed byone of its founders - Boris Vassilev (Borkisha).
The name of the club has been changed by force three times during thetotalitarian communist regime, from 1950 till 1957 - “Dinamo”, from1969 till 1985 - “Levski - Spartak” (after the union of the club with“Spartak” - Sofia) and from 1985 till 1989 - “Vitosha”.
The name of the club for its true friends has always been “Levski”.
Mincho Kachulev designed the badge of the club and it was produced in 1922.
The first hymn of the club was created in 1924 after the text of D. Simidov, the melody was composed by Hristo Manikov.
At the beginning yellow and red colors the basic colors of the club, and from 1920 till now the blue has been accepted as basic.
In 1914, the first officially elected management of the club was the following: Vladimir Grigorov (Valdisa) - Chairman, Georgi Manolov - Deputy Chairman, Krum Dinkov - Secretary, Boris Vassilev - Cashier, Stefan Toshkov and Atanas Iankov - members and Kostadin Manolov - manager.
During the first years after 1914, the football team of LEVSKI consisted of the following main players: K. Gigorov - goalkeeper, K. Manolov and K. Dinkov - Defenders, S. Stoyanov and B. Vassilev - Midfield, V. Grigorov, C. Genev, P. Stoyanovich, G. Manolov and D. Sirakov - Forwarders.
Initially the club did not possess a field of its own and the training was held on the empty place called “the hillock” (National Palace of Culture has been built there) and afterwards on the drill ground of 6th infantry regiment. Not until 1924, the
SofiaMunicipality provides the club with a football filed which was finally built in 1933. Today the Vassil Levski National Stadium is situated there.
Levski lost its first official match with FC 13, Sofia with the score of 0:2.
Till 1921 no football championship was carried on. In the summer of 1921, when the Sofia Sports League was founded out, which united 11 clubs from
Sofia, the official Championship chronicle of the “Blue” has begun.
Levski won the first match in the championship for the season 1921/22, held on
18 September 1921, with Atletic, Sofia, scoring 3:1.
Championship
The football Championship of Bulgaria has taken place in different periods with two systems.

Initially from 1921/22 till 1936/37 the matches were played with a score system in the groups of the sixth sports federations: Sofia, North Bulgaria, Black sea, Trace, Bdin and South-West. After that the winners in the regional groups define the Champion of the country by the system of elimination.

The first national championship was played in 1924, but never ended.

From 1938 till 1940 the championship was carried out into one common national football league with the score system in use. The league consisted of 10 football clubs.

From 1941 till 1948 the championship was again taken back to the initial mixed system but the number of the participants from the Sofia regional league was increased to 3, as well as the Trace and North Bulgaria – each up to 2 clubs.

From 1949 till now the championship has been defined into one national “A” football group.

LEVSKI – Sofia is the only Bulgarian football club that in all these 73 championships has played either in the First Sofia football league and in the national “A” football group. Five of these championships have not ended.

Cups
So far the national cup of Bulgaria has possessed three trophies – the King’s Cup, the Cup of the Soviet Army and the Cup of Bulgaria.
The Cup of the King has been gifted by the King in 1924. Initially it has been given to the champion football club of Bulgaria. In 1938 till 1942 including a separate tournament for it was established.
The Cup of the Soviet Army was presented to the management of the occupational armies of the Red Army in 1946. Till 1989 a tournament was played for that trophy but it was an official one till 1980. The winner of it is the official holder of the Cup of Bulgaria.
The Cup of Bulgaria has been a trophy since 1980 and it was established by the Bulgarian Football Union.
Five tournaments were played for the Cup of the King, 35 for the Cup of the Soviet Army, plus 9 without any value for the National Cup, and for the Cup of Bulgaria – still being played.
Till 1937 different tournaments for the Cup of Bulgaria have never been played. The situation is the same in 1943, 1944 and 1945. The regulations and the number of the participant in the tournament have changed during the years, but they remain the most visited football competitions.
