Dobroudja region covers the Northeast part of Bulgaria –on the north it is bounded by the Danube River, on the east – by the Black Sea and on the west by the Northern folklore region.
The endless wheat fields, waving in the wind, inspiring sunsets and dawns, had immense influence on the songs and the dances in this folklore region.

Two folklore styles are most typical in Dobroudja region –Trakiyski (Thracian) and Вalkandjiyski (Balkan) – that originate from the deep layers of the ancient local traditions. One of the peculiarities of this region is the song associated with harvest time, rich in ornaments, through which Dobroudja local people express their cult of the soil and its fertility.
A specific feature of the Dobroudja region is the creation of a new but typical only for this area instrumental style, performed by playing the rebec (“gadulka”), kaval and bagbipe (“gayda”). Dobroudja Region is famous for the dance melodies and tunes such as “ruki”, “sboreni”, “ruchenitsa, etc. Neighboring Romania also influenced Bulgarian instrumental folklore style in these lands.

Distinguishing features of Dobroudja folk dances are that they liven up the mood and that they are performed by free and loosen body movements - the arms and the shoulders are important elements of the performance. The rhythm is moderate; the body is slightly leaning backwards.

Dobroudja dances (‘hora”) are performed in a closed semi-circle or a straight-lined “ruchenitsa”. Men play in a straight line and when women join them they form a circle or a semi-circle.

Dobroudja men love dancing “po sami” (as solo dancers); for example the “ruchenika” is a group performance but it looks like performed by a number of single solo dancers. Most popular Dobroudja folk dances (“hora”) are “Sboreniya”, “Ruka”, “Dantes”, “Buenets”, Paydushko, Sey, Sey bob”, “Brusni tsurvoul” (Whisk Your Pigskin Sandals).
