Ski holidays BulgariaBansko Skiing Holidays

The ancient town of Bansko is situated at the foothills of majestic Pirin, one of the most beautiful Bulgarian mountains and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Certainly Bulgaria’s up and coming winter destination, Bansko combines excellent well-groomed tree-lined pistes, a good snow-sure record and an efficient infrastructure. The two main, newly renovated ski-centres are located above the town on the northern slopes of Pirin - the low altitude Chalin Valog (1100-1600m) and the high altitude Shiligarnika (1700-2500m). Bansko’s ski centres have an extensive variety of skiing for any age and level. Slalom and giant slalom runs are available in the latter. Quality, modern resort accommodation offer a good range of amenities. A regular bus-shuttle service interlinks the town, the mountain hotels and the main ski centres.

Tours can be arranged to Semkovo ski centre in Rila Mountain which is a 40 minunte drive away and helicopter trips can bring you to Borovets, the largest ski centre in Bulgaria, within 20 minutes.

The Bansko ski school is a very good one, with plenty of blue runs for beginners to practice on. The ski area is great for the intermediate skier, with well-maintained, wide, picturesque runs. More advanced skiers will especially enjoy the excellent opportunity to maximize skiing practices.

The charming town of Bansko draws a great number of visitors with its 120 cultural monuments, museum-houses and the Bansko school of icon painting exhibitions. The region is famous for its cuisine and colourful traditions. Après-ski is cosy and relaxed, evolving around the vast selection of “mehana,” which are taverna style restaurants offering delicious local fare and live entertainment. There is a good choice of local shops in Bansko and a trip to the historic, old town is well worth the visit for purchasing souvenirs.

Ski holidays BulgariaBorovets Skiing Holidays

Without a doubt the best resort in Bulgaria this resort is ideal for beginners, families and those on a budget.
Borovets received its first skiers at the end of the 19th Century and has been pulling skiers in from Eastern Europe steadily since then. Western European tour operators have recently discovered the resort and are attracting customers who want good skiing on a budget.
Situated on the northern slopes of Rila Mountain at an elevation of 1350m the village has a good selection of restaurants, hotels and nightspots. There is also some shopping to be had - bring cash however, the commission rates on credit card purchases are rather high.
For beginners this resort is a godsend. There are over 200 ski instructors working in Borovets and most of them speak English. This and some very good nursery slopes make Borovets an inexpensive and excellent place to learn how to ski. Intermediates will find a few challenges but experts will probably find the slopes limiting.
The snow reliability is very good and the local climate yields a very long season. The highest lift lets you off at 2560m, which is an altitude capable of competing with some of the higher Western European resorts. Piste grooming has come ahead in leaps and bounds in recent years and the lift system is being improved all the time. Night skiing is also available at Borovets on most nights, especially Wednesday and Friday nights (depending on weather conditions).

Ski holidays BulgariaPamporovo Skiing Holidays

Situated high up in the Rhodopa mountains at the foot of Mount Snejanka this Bulgarian resort is ideal for beginners and intermediates. The long greens and blues, as well as the nursery slopes down in the village are ideal for learning and progressing on. Ski instruction is of an extremely high standard and, because Bulgaria is so easy on the wallet, individual tuition can be very affordable. Many of the instructors also speak English fluently. Confident intermediates and advanced skiers will find a World Cup run and some interesting through-the-trees off piste but this is really a resort for beginner skiers and snowboarders who want to learn and progress.

The après ski is quite lively and confined mainly to the hotel bars. The most popular bars are BJ's (inside Hotel Perelik) and Spider Night Club (inside Hotel Murgavets). Both of these hotels are connected under ground passage, which makes pub crawls that must easier. For those looking for a good night out on the town, then a Balkan Pub Crawl night will definately appeal to you. Other activities include bowling, historical excursions, swimming and shopping.
